Report from Santa Pod
Report from Santa Pod 16/17th September by Graham Sykes

The Northern NSA ventured to The Pod to be involved in a 2 day ground breaking meeting shared by the Straightliners Championship and the ACU Drag Racing Championship, bringing together 2 days of the quickest 2 and 3 wheeler vehicles in the country and it was a privilege to be part of this event.
18 NSA riders entered on Saturday, Alan Tinion running a 9.76 on his Baker Yamaha. 1000cc Racing saw David Batchelor on his 750cc GSXR do an 11.40 at 121mph.
Class 9 Unlimited Racing saw Martin Wilmot run a 9.84 at 137mph on the ex Pip Hyham comp bike, still as nice as I remember.
Unlimited 3 Wheeler Class – four riders competed, Dave Woolard running 10.68 against 10 87 run by Jason Brown, Dennis Keen who broke the track at his last visit to the Pod by running a 10.21 could only manage an 11.01. I came last, having had 2 head gaskets blow run 1, clutch breaking run 2 and breaking a rocker and bending 4 push rods on run 3, so not a good day, best time I did was 11.2 at 127mph.
Stu Rogers in the Pre 46 Vintage Class ran a very quick 13.02 at 99mph.
Class 16 saw Alan Tinion replace the track record of 10.62 with a 10.61, how many track records has Alan broken this year?
Martyn Greathead running a 10.15 at 145mph in the Unlimited Road Legal Class.
Sunday saw 17 NSA riders competing, Stuart Owen of the 100mph Scooter.com website turned up with his very well prepared Lambretta running a 13.55, racing in the 250cc Racing Class. Martin Wilmott turned up on Sunday on the old faithful Threshing machine 500cc Triumph and posted a 9.95 at 132mph and setting a few car alarms off with the noise!
Sam Green riding his 750 Honda managed a 16.28 at 89mph and that was his only run, presumably hitting problems. Dave Batchelor in the 1000cc Racing ran another 11.4, the same time and speed as his best time on Saturday.
In the Unlimited Racing Tony Davidge on his GSXR1100 ran a 9.77 at 147mph with a really strong run throughout.
In a complete turn round I came top in the Unlimited 3 Wheeler Class doing a 10.4 second run at 135mph, having worked till midnight with Jack Graham to re-build the engine after the damage incurred on the last run on Sarturday, so all that work was rewarded with a win, thanks Jack.
Dennis Keen getting into the 10’s with his best run at 10.74. Dave Woolard ran a 10.77 at 116mph in his only attempt of the day.
Pete Harman turned up and only managed one run during which he proceeded to bend both exhaust valves by missing his gear change, best of luck with the repair.
Stu Rogers stayed for the 2 days but ran slower than Saturday with a 13.3.
In the Scooters it was nice to see Dave Betts win the Scooter Class with a 14.26 at 70mph. Dave hasn’t had the best of seasons having had more than his fair share of problems, so it’s nice to see the bike come good.
Chris Cullen on the CR750 ran 14.85 at 88mph on his 4th and last run, taking the win in the Classic Jap Class. Steve Walton on his 885 Triumph ran an 11.0 at 113mph in the 1000cc Road Legal Class. Martyn ran a quick 10.2 at 143mph on his GT Motorcycle 1200ZX12R, Mr consistent hey!
The V Sprint Championship had the pleasure of Phil Wood riding the Harley V Rod Destroyer, who took the track record from me, held only from Saturday, lowering it to an impressive 9.99 at 129mph, well-done Phil. I came second with a 10.5 at 134mph on The Syko.
Given the fact that there were over 200 bikes competing during the day everything went smoothly, and thanks go out to everyone who helped run the meeting, they all know who they are. Seeing the ACU Top Bikes running consistent low 7’s is inspiring and all us mortals can do is admire the technology and devotion that goes into making these bikes so fast and so reliable.
Top Speed Day
On 24th September there will be a Top Speed Day at Elvington on the main runway, this event is for bikes and cars.
V Sprint News from the North
The Carlisle Show was a great success, lots of people there, and we have been invited back next year. The Syko appeared for the first time as a 3 wheeler, unfortunately it could not run, but Graham did a few burn outs which always draws the crowds.

The Syko has made a couple of appearances since the show but the new set up has not been without problems, these have now been rectified, and we are hoping to take it to Elvington on Sunday 10th September, for a Run What You Brung meeting.

The next Northern Round is at Santa Pod on 16th/17th September. Admission is £10 each day, £20 for the weekend, entry fees as usual.

Still at Santa Pod on Sunday 24th is the next Southern Round, admission £10, entry fees as usual.

We hope to get to both with The Syko, come and join us there and don’t forget the V Sprint Championship is still running and The Syko will run as the first 3 wheeler in the Championship! Take a look at a video of Syko running here CLICK HERE

Cheers

Diane
